All Natural Sugar Scrub Recipe

So, every winter the same thing happens – ROUGH–TOUGH–CRACKED–CHAPPED skin.  I get tiny little cuts along my knuckles, my fingertips catch on woolly sweaters and my disdain for winter cranks up a notch. I could probably use my hands as sandpaper if we ran out. Ok so I think you get the point – my hands are dry. This winter has been especially difficult – I mean honestly my hands take a beating in mild winter conditions nevermind this deep freeze we have been having with temperatures as low as -43 celsius with the windchill. What doesn’t help is the constant washing of hands and dishes. So what really helps me out is having a nice pretty jar of sugar scrub to slather on to keep my hands supple and sweet smelling. I’ve made some to keep at work – the girls I work with just love it. The best part (besides the fact it feels like a dream on your hands and all the compliments you get from people that think you have made the greatest thing since chocolate) is the fact that it is so simple and so cheap and it’s home made…none of the harmful chemicals, dyes and fragrances. Just pure simple goodness with a few ingredients you likely already have on hand.

Our Natural Sugar Scrub Recipe

1 3/4 cups of white sugar
1/2 cup coconut oil (melted)
1/4 cup almond oil (don’t worry if you don’t have this…try all coconut oil or olive oil)
1 1/2 tbsp cinnamon
1 tbsp instant coffee
1/2 tsp. of vitamin E oil (not necessary but a nice touch)
1 tbsp. vanilla

That is my favourite and my stand by. Just dump all of the above ingredients in a bowl and stir it up. Apply liberally and wash away. It smells divine. I love to make up a big batch and put it in jars with a pretty ribbon or tag (these ones are my favourite size) for teacher gifts, hostess gifts, last minute birthday gifts, momma to be gifts…it’s endless – they are just awesome and the best part is you can customize it. Make it your own. Be all crazy and use half cup of brown sugar instead of all white, use coconut sugar, honey, cocoa powder, pumpkin pie spice, essential oils, whatever floats your boat.  I mean honestly this is not a new idea at all. There are tons of “recipes” on line. This mix is just what I’ve found works for me. I’m totally making a peppermint chocolate one next. I promise you will never buy expensive sugar scrubs again. Not to mention that many of the exfoliating scrubs out there are filled with those little plastic beads that are terrible for our water and our fish (check out this article for more info) when really sugar has the same exfoliating effect without the harmful effects on your person and your planet. P.S. Did I mention how soft and silky my hands are feeling…so luxurious…feels like I’ve had a spa treatment. It’s a good stress break at work. If you need me I’ll be in the bathroom scrubbing up.
